Letter to Future English 110 Students

Dear Future English 110 students,

Just like any other new experience or class I have taken, I was nervous. However, after taking the quarter there is nothing to stress or worry about. The English 110 not only re-teaches concepts taught throughout High School, but also prepares you for the big ARP paper due at the end of the quarter. Throughout the English class, it is crucial to attend class everyday to understand the concept being taught and to really grasp the ideas need to write your research paper.

There are a couple key concepts that you should keep in mind while taking this class that will help you receive the grade and experience you want to get.

1. One of the most important concept is to stay on top of your work. Just like any other class it is important to stay with your work. However, in English it is a crucial key to stay on top of your work to fully receive the benefits of being in English 110. This will give you more time for you as student to proofread your work as well as meet with the teacher to talk about your paper.

2. At the end of the year, do not forget that you have to write the common place. Even though the ARP is a big paper, there is another paper written to the general public that I found harder to write then the ARP. In this case its better if your one step ahead of the class. This always enables for you to not stress and cram your paper.

3. The last key concept, is make friends in your English class. By making friends it is easier to help someone else proofread your papers. Also, the class is so small compared to a lot of OSU classes that it is easier to make friends that can make the class something to look forward too.

In general, 1. Stay on top of your work., 2. Leave enough room to be able to ask the teacher questions and peer edit, 3. Have fun and make friends. College is all about the experience and through writing you can help write about the experience, as well as creating one.

Food in the Dorm

These photos were taken over this weekend on the food that people enjoy to eat in my dorm. As you can tell it may not be the healthiest food, but the food ranging from delicious popcorn to apples being juggled. People in the dorms love to eat, and there is nothing better then chilling with your friends and eating. Eating brings people from all cultures together. It is one object that all human kind can relate too because we all need to eat in order to survive. However, as you can see there are plenty of ways in eating food juggling it, watching a movie, just chilling with friends etc. For the year, this is how I have been enjoying food!

Feels Like Home

In order to know the meaning of my foods/foodways, I feel one should each others culture first. Both my grandparents were born and raised in Slovenia, (a European country in between Croatia and Austria), and came to America. Throughout my life being Slovenian has/ is important to my family. Along with every culture is their types of food and foodways. There are many delicious foods within the Slovenian culture however there are two important foods that come to mention are Krofe and Klobasa. Krofe is shown above, but it also is known in America as a "slovenian donut", although to me it does not taste like a donut. However, there different ways of making them. For example they can be plan or they can have different types of stuffing inside such as: apples and cherries. It is a main food product during the events of Mardi Gras. In addition to Krofe, I love Klobasa. Klobasa is a Slovenian sausage that can be eaten at any and every occasion. However, a lot of Slovenians I know of try to make their own Klobasa and it becomes of competition on who can make the best sausage. It can be eaten on a bun or sometimes sauerkraut. Either way it is VERY DELICIOUS.

Grocery Store Musical & Orbit Gum

I think the Grocery Store musical would be interesting to analyze because unlike any other musical it is improved in a spot where no one really thinks much of, a grocery store. As the actors break out into song about fruit, the lyrics are interesting and funny but bring interest into the audience. First because the unusual breakthrough of song, but also the topic of “fruit squishing together”. Also, the people chosen to act out the song are all different, for example a pregnant woman, a business man a girl in a trench coat. They make the song seem real and typical that people would sing about fruit. Another interesting aspect of the food song is the reaction to the people as they shop throughout the grocery store.

Orbit Gum Commercial

I think this commercial would be interesting to analyze because it shows the allusions of food as their quarrel over a problem between the two girls they refer to each other like “what the French toast?” The commercial also gears towards how their gum, Orbit can “clean-up” your mouth. This commercial is interesting how they interplay the tasks of food for other things such as insults but also physically cleaning out each other’s mouth. Another funny aspect about the commercial is how this gum instantly cleans out the vocabulary of your mouth. Not to mention the setting given in the background of the commercial: an empty office.

Food has never been a problem in our family until sophomore year of high school. Sophomore year I found out that I was diagnosed with fructose n tolerance. Just to fill you in on what fructose n tolerance, “fructose intolerance is a disorder in which a person lacks the protein needed to break down fructose. (Healthtools.AARP.org) So this pretty much means that I cannot have any fruit, juice, candy, and other fruity sugars. This memory of being diagnosed with fructose has affected my eating habits for life. Even though doctors say I grew into, there is a possibility I can grow out of it, but as of right now I have to deal with these obstacles opening up my food horizon. This condition not only has trained me to restrict my diet, but build self control. Becoming fructose n tolerant has also opened my horizon to eating new things that I would probably never have tried before, but because my diet already is pretty limited I am open for anything. I am also a lot more interested in how food is made and pay attention to labels more. This experience in itself reveals my interests in non-fructose items, but has also given me little perks throughout my life. For example coming to Ohio State, they offer personal chefs for those with disabilities. Meeting with Chef Mike Newman, he offered a personal chef for me on south campus at Kennedy Commons. As thrilling as that sounds, I decided to experience the campus food on my own and deal with my problems without a chef. I understand that I could have had my own food, but I wanted to put this problem in my hands. I am the type of person who hates making people go out of there way for me. Having this disability has educated me more on the basic concepts of food and different types of sugars. Being fructose n tolerance stinks, but there are perks that come along with it and I have learned to not dwell on the no fruit and emphasize more on the perks.
